UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

The University of Manchester is one of
the most popular universities in the country, receiving
more applications than almost any other university in
the UK.
It's not difficult to see why. The campus
is lively and buzzing with energy. There are more than
18,000 students here, drawn from all parts of the UK
and all over the world, as well as almost 3,000 academic
staff, many of whom have international reputations in
their own subjects. Add to this the students from the
neighboring universities and just about everything you
could wish to do is catered for here.
The University of Manchester grew from
its humble beginnings as Owens College in 1851 to become
the first of the UK's great civic universities. As a
full-range university it now has courses covering almost
every subject, and has more than 18,000 full-time students,
including 2,500 international students, from over 120
countries.
The University's size gives students a
wide and flexible choice in courses and in lifestyle,
with outstanding facilities for learning and leisure.
The excellent laboratory and computer facilities reflect
the University's standing. There are more than 6,000
PCs across the campus and every student has access to
e-mail and the World Wide Web, while with 3,600,000
books and more than 1,000,000 manuscript items, the
University Library is one of the three largest in the
country.
On the sporting front, the University's
facilities are excellent, catering for most sports.
There are two, large indoor sports centres, and two,
large, outdoor sports grounds with pitches for rugby,
soccer, hockey and lacrosse, tennis courts and an athletics
track, in addition to a host of sports clubs organized
by the Athletic Union.
The University has more than 70 departments
involved in teaching and research, with more than 2,000
academic staff. We have more undergraduate degrees than
almost any other university in the UK. In recent independent
teaching quality assessments our departments have consistently
achieved very high ratings. At postgraduate level all
departments offer supervision for research and there
is a wide selection of taught postgraduate courses across
the range of academic disciplines.
The University provides a range of facilities
for all students. The Accommodation Office can help
to organize accommodation for all students throughout
their time at the University. The Careers Service is
consistently rated as one of the best in the country,
and more employers visit us each year than any other
UK university. As one would expect, there are also a
range of other support facilities to cope with all aspects
of student life, which are backed up with services provided
by the Students' Union.
