INTRODUCTION

The UK scholarships were originally established by the Soros Foundation - Hungary in the late 1980's. They are now run in over 25 countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. The programs provide around 120 scholarships every year for study in the UK - mainly for non-degree research and Masters programs.

All these programs are joint scholarships, and the costs are shared by:

· The Open Society Institute;
· The Universities;
· The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (the British Foreign Ministry).

"Chevening" is the name of the British Foreign Secretary's Official Residence. The name is used by the FCO for their scholarships - like a brand-name.

Competition for the OSI-Chevening awards is open and merit-based. Selection is made on the basis of academic excellence, knowledge of English and leadership potential.

The program is advertised through:
· Website: www.osi.hu/hsp; www.soros.org.mn
· List serves including related organizations and individuals who are registered to subscribe Scholarship information
· Daily newspaper
· Presentations, posters and leaflets at universities
