English Proficiency
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
The purpose of the test is to evaluate
the English proficiency of people whose native language
is not English. The test uses multiple-choice format
to measure the ability to understand North American
English. There are two kinds of TOEFL:
1. OFFICIAL TOEFL - consisting of four
sections (listening comprehension, structure and written
expression, reading comprehension and essay writing),
scores are valid to any Western universities.
2. INSTITUTIONAL TOEFL - Mongolian Foundation
for Open Society administers institutional TOEFL from
the applicants of the Soros Scholarship programs. Scores
are valid only within the administering institutions.
The test consists of:
· Listening comprehension - Measures
ability to understand English as it is spoken in North
America.
· Structure and written expression - Measures
ability to recognize language that is appropriate for
standard written English.
· Reading comprehension - Measures ability to
understand non-technical reading matter.
An applicant may fulfill the requirement
for competence in English by achieving a competitive
score (550 minimum) on the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL).
