BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Each year the Scholarship Programs of
Soros foundation fund 20 partial scholarships for four
years of undergraduate liberal arts study at the American
University in Bulgaria (AUBG), located in Blagoevgrad,
Bulgaria. AUBG is a highly selective, private, residential
university awarding Baccalaureate degree that was founded
in 1991 subsequent to the fall of totalitarian regimes
in Eastern Europe. It is an international institution
committed to democratic values and founded on the traditions
of academic independence and freedom of inquiry and
expression.
Students pursue majors in areas such as
applied economics, business administration, computer
science, English, history, journalism/mass communications,
political science, and Southeast European Studies. English
is the language of instruction. Currently, students
from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Croatia,
Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia,
Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia are
eligible to apply for Soros fellowships. Soros fellowships
partially cover the cost of tuition, room and board,
health insurance, books, and annual travel to the university
throughout the four-year course of study at AUBG. On
behalf of the Open Society Institute- Budapest, the
Mongolian Foundation for Open Society has been running
the American University in Bulgaria scholarship Program
since 1997. Within the last 6 years, through this program
10 students received scholarship. Two students from
Mongolia graduate the AUBG.
