SCHOLARSHIPS
Goal:
The main goal of the Scholarship Program is to increase
the number of highly educated professionals in Mongolia
who can contribute to the political, economic, social
and cultural development of the country; to create lasting
cross-national ties between Mongolians and professionals
from other countries; and to foster tolerance and understanding
by providing opportunities for Mongolian citizens to
experience different cultures and countries.
Program Achievements:
The number of scholarship recipients from countryside
has increased.
The number of scholarship recipients studying in Europe
and Western countries has increased.
"Soros Alumni Association of Mongolia"
was established on August 24, 2001. The association
consists of 24 members of the graduates of Western universities
such as Columbia in NY, Duke, Essex University in UK,
University of Pennsylvania, American university, Central
European University in Budapest, International Management
Center in Budapest by the scholarship provided by Soros
Foundation.
Total 390 people were awarded grants from
the following eleven scholarship programs in the period
of 1999-2002: Mongolian Professional Fellowship, Social
Work Fellowship, Supplementary National Grant Program,
Soros Supplementary Grant Program, Global Supplementary
Grant Program, Central European University, University
of Manchester, American University in Bulgaria, Undergraduate
Exchange Program, and Secondary School Students' Exchange
Program. Thus, they were provided with an opportunity
to study and improve their knowledge and education in
countries such as the USA, the UK, Hungary and Bulgaria.
The Foundation organized a series
of lectures, meetings and discussions titled, What Scholarships
We Offer and How To Apply for them at the MFOS Educational
Advising Resource Center (EARC) branches in Darhan,
Erdenet, and Khovd aimag where application forms and
information bulletins were distributed. Also, advisory
sessions for people interested in applying to the MFOS
scholarship programs were conducted every Wednesday
at EARC. We continued our firm cooperation with Peace
Corps, VSO, and national universities both in Ulaanbaatar
and in other aimags by introducing our scholarship opportunities
and distributing application forms by Peace Corps Volunteers
to targeted public.
