Goal: The goal of the program is to improve the quality of English language instruction offered in Mongolia, with focus in secondary school English language curriculum, textbook development and teacher training.

Program components:
1. Development of EL Textbooks for 5-10th grades
The English language curriculum and Textbook Development project team consisting of 8 Mongolian professionals with the consultant Susan Mohamed from UK is working on the development of secondary school level EL textbooks of international standards. Each set of the textbooks consists of Students' book, Activity book and Teacher's manual. In the past 3 years we completed books for 5th and 6th grades and in August, 2003 the 3rd set will be printed and distributed to schools.

2. In-service Teacher Training and Mentoring Project
EL program has been organizing series of in-service trainings for EL teachers to improve their language skills and teaching methodology. There was signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education on certification of EL national trainers.

3. Soros Professional English Language Teaching Program (SPELT)
EL program also places EL instructors from USA to work in Mongolian secondary schools and higher education institutions. Besides teaching students SPELT instructors conduct methodology workshops for teachers and aid schools in English books, materials and curriculum development.

4. Academic Writing Course for applicants to International Academic Programs:
Pilot project initiated from OSI NY. The main aim is to provide support on the ground to prospective applicants to CEU and other international English medium academic programs (undergraduate and graduate levels). In 2002-2003 academic year 15 university teachers received extensive course consisting of essay writing, TOEFL preparation and interview preparation totaling in 60 hours of trainings.
